DNA Testing & Nutrigenomics

The unique variations in our DNA influence our overall health and wellbeing.

Nutrigenomics can show us how our genes are expressed from the food we eat. This means we can use this as a tool to help us become healthier. Whether that is for weight loss, weight management, immune health, memory support, gut health plus many other factors.

Whilst the food we eat does not alter the sequence of our DNA, they can activate or deactivate certain genes, influencing their expression and ultimately shaping our health and well being.

Your Genetic Blueprint

When we delve into your genetic makeup, we’re essentially crafting a personalised roadmap for your health journey. This roadmap not only sheds light on your body’s unique strengths and areas needing attention but also offers insights into specific symptoms you may be experiencing, such as fatigue, stress, weight gain, memory problems, lack of sleep, or headaches etc…

By understanding how your genes interact with your lifestyle and nutrition choices, we can pinpoint areas where small adjustments can make a big difference.

For instance, we might identify certain genetic variations that predispose you to stress or fatigue, allowing us to tailor nutrition recommendations to support your body in managing these symptoms more effectively.

Whether it’s tweaking your diet, adjusting your exercise routine, or incorporating stress-reducing techniques, our goal is to empower you to make targeted changes that alleviate symptoms and optimise your overall health and vitality as you age.

Methylation is a chemical process that happens in our bodies all the time. It’s like a tiny tag (methyl groups consisting of one carbon and three hydrogen atoms) that gets added to different molecules, including DNA, proteins, and neurotransmitters. This tag helps control how these molecules work.

Methylation is super important for our body because it regulates many essential functions, such as:

General – 5 sub-cycles – Folate, Methionine, Neuro (BH4), Transsulphuration, Urea, B vitamins – B6, folate(s) , B12 needs, choline needs, homocysteine recycling/ toxicity

Energy – fatigue/ chronic fatigue, B vitamin needs

Cardiovascular – homocysteine, stroke, endothelial damage, blood clotting

Immunity – white blood cell, red blood cell, allergies, sulphite/ suphate, histamine, cancer

Neurological – serotonin – mood, depression, behaviour, dopamine – motivation, addiction, ADHD, anxiety (homocysteine – glutamate, or catecholamine related) autism (neurotransmitter, and toxicity related)

Toxicity/ Detox – glutathione synthesis, homocysteine recycling, ammonia toxicity, ROS neutralisation.

Steroid hormones are a set of hormones produced from cholesterol, which include progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, DHEA, and cortisol, along with their derivatives.

These hormones play vital roles in regulating various body processes in both males and females, such as reproductive system development and function, metabolism, inflammation, and immune system function. Symptoms of hormonal imbalances may show as :

infertility, low libido and sex drive, low sperm count, acne, excess facial hair in women, PCOS, PMS, blood clots, mood swings, depression, substance misuse, poor memory, weight gain (belly fat for men) breast appearances in men, hormone sensitive cancers – breast cancer/prostate cancer.

The nervous system facilitates communication throughout the body and mind, allowing individuals to react to their surroundings. Neurotransmitters, molecules that convey signals between neurons and across nerve connections (synapses), play a crucial role in this process. Excitatory neurotransmitters boost the likelihood of a neuron sending a signal, whereas inhibitory neurotransmitters have the opposite effect. It’s essential for these neurotransmitters to maintain a balance for us to effectively engage with our environment.

Symptoms or conditions that could be affected with our nervous system:

Mental health disorders – anxiety/worry, depression, general or social anxiety disorders or phobias, panic attacks or disorders, bipolar disorder, ADHD, PTSD, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), obsessive behaviour (adrenaline), addiction

Mood – irritability or restlessness / agitation, low mood, mood disorders (SAD, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder), anger or violent behaviour, lack of motivation – decreased drive and motivation, lethargy, dizziness, decreased libido

Appetite – appetite, hunger or cravings, weight gain, anorexia nervosa

Sleep – insomnia / sleep disturbances, obstructive sleep apnea, excessive need for sleep, poor attention and lack of focus, fatigue / chronic fatigue

GI issues – constipation, gut sensitivity or diarrhoea, nausea

Pain – increased pain sensitivity, chronic pain, joint pain, migraines / Headaches

Neurodegenative – seizures or convulsions, muscle tremors or spasms, motor control disruption, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease (resting tremor)

General –  pyroluria, hyperthyroidism, hyperglycaemia and hyperinsulinemia, high blood pressure or hypotension, bone loss, orthostatic intolerance, carcinoid syndrome.

The thyroid is a gland in your neck that makes two important hormones called triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), as well as another hormone called calcitonin. These hormones are like messengers that control how your body’s cells work, affecting things like how fast you burn calories and your heart health. Many factors, like your genes and things in your environment, can affect how well your thyroid works. This includes things like the nutrients you get from your diet (like tyrosine, selenium, and iodine), exposure to certain toxins (like fluoride or chlorine), stress, and even infections from bacteria or viruses.

Symptoms associated with Thyroid imbalance may include:

Hypothyroidism – weight gain, fatigue, low libido, cold intolerance, dry skin, constipation, depression

Hyperthyroidism – anxiety, heat intolerance, heart palpitations, insomnia, weight loss

With advances in DNA sequencing, we now have personalised ways to approach health and fitness. This means we can be smarter about how we train, recover, and perform. In this report, it will highlight parts of your DNA that can impact how you perform athletically.

Train –  cardio-vascular adaption, strategic fuelling, structural strength

Recover – resilience, inflammation, oxidative stress, sleep

Perform –  stress, stimulation

Histamine serves various roles in the body: it acts as a messenger in the brain and nervous system, helps in digestion by prompting the release of stomach acid, and is released in response to stress, injury, or allergies as part of the immune system’s response.

Histamine intolerance occurs when there’s an imbalance between the amount of histamine accumulated in the body and its ability to break it down. When the body can’t break down histamine fast enough, it can become toxic.

Here are some symptoms that may be contributed to histamine intolerance:

Skin –  redness, itchiness, rash, eczema, hives

Respiratory – runny nose, broncho-constriction, asthma, chronic cough, nasal congestion

GI tract issues – stomach acid reflux, diarrhoea, nausea/vomiting

Vascular – vasodilatation, low blood pressure, dizziness, fainting, rapid heart beat, oedema, migraine/headaches

Neurological – insomnia, anxiety, memory issues, concentration problems, ADHD

How do you do the test?

You will be sent your Lifecode Gx® DNA kit with the test you order through the post.

The test is a simple, non-invasive mouth swab that is easy to do at home. You need to abstain from eating/drinking for at least 1 hour before testing.

Simply collect a sample of cheek cells using the swab (takes just 1 minute) and place the sample and stabilising capsule in the tube provided.  Complete and sign the consent form and place everything in the return packaging provided.

There are no special storage or transport requirements and you can return any day. For international returns, the client is responsible for arranging and paying for return.

The test is not impacted by HRT, contraceptives, pregnancy, nutritional supplements, exercise or any other environmental factors.

Do you have to be over 18?

You can be tested if you are under 18 years with a parent or guardian’s consent.

However, I do not work with clients who are under 18. If you have a child that wishes to be tested, let me know and I will put you in touch with a registered Nutrigenomics Practitioner.

Do I have to be tested regularly?

Our genes are fixed from birth, and the results will not be dependent by your diet, medical conditions or medications you are taking.

You only need to be tested once, because your genetics don’t change.

However, what you do (health & nutrition wise) can help your genetics be expressed more effectively where needed – therefore helping to improve our health.

Is my data safe?

This is quoted on the lifecode GX website when explaining how they store your data:

” We are also really careful with your sensitive data, storing it securely, protecting it using the highest industry standards. We hold the minimum client data for the minimum amount of time.  On receipt by Lifecode Gx samples are allocated a barcode and all other client identification is removed. The test is used only to create the reports which are only shared with the authorised practitioner and Lifecode Gx senior staff. Each test is processed in our ISO certified UK laboratory and all samples are completely destroyed after 3 months. All client genotyping data is marked for destruction at 5 months and completely destroyed by 6 months. The client report, the data and the DNA sample is never (and will never be) shared with, or sold to third parties. All of the data extraction and analysis is done in the UK.”

Sonia has been a wealth of information and support over the past 12 weeks. I was really struggling with migraines, low energy and weight that wouldn't shift. The information and advice that Sonia has shared with me has had a huge impact on my health and quality of life. Although the migraines haven't completely gone they have much improved and as a result I have been able to focus on my other health goals. I now understand how what I eat and when effects my energy levels and weight. Thank you Sonia, I have learnt so much and now have the tools to continue to work towards my goals.

I knew Sonia from our gym days so was delighted when I googled nutritionist and her name popped up first. I was at the end if my tehter as Ive just kept gaining and gaining weight for no apparent reason. I eat healthy and trained 3 to 4 times a week. Before my first consultation with Sonia I had blood tests and when I first saw her I told her my symptoms and she immediately said to go gluten free and take my temperature every morning for 2 weeks. This showed Sonia what she wanted to see and soon after I had my Dr's diagnosis. I also suffer with acid reflux. Dr said take gaviscon for 2 weeks, if it helps ill prescribe you something... I stopped eating nightshade foods, Google it... Who knew?! I've not had gaviscon since. Once we knew the root of the problem Sonia immediately got to work on mounds and mounds, of research, dietary needs and habit breaking suggestions. I'd have a snack at 10 and 3 and breakfast, lunch ant tea... I didn't need it, it was a habit. Managed to break that in a week... I had 2 12 week cycles with Sonia and I feel a lot better and less sluggish. I'm on the right road and I know this is not an overnight fix but with Sonia guidance and knowledge I'll get there. As yet, I've not lost any weight but it will come. If I'd not reconnected with Sonia, I don't know what I'd be doing now... Sorry for the long post... I could go on and on... Thank you Sonia x

It was my husband who saw I was despairing about my weight, bloatedness, puffiness and who knew I was unhappy within myself… he knows Sonia and after much persuasion from him I decided to book my half hour session thinking it’ll be a waste of time … maybe I’ll try slimming world again (for the umpteenth time!). Well .. that half an hour with Sonia turned on a switch .. she listened to what my ailments were, how unhappy I was with myself and because of certain different medical reasons how I felt down about the way I was… she listened and said I can help you and I believed she could .. that half an hour gave me hope! 12 weeks down the line I’m at the end of the tunnel .. it’s bright.. I feel fantastic.. weight is coming off, I’m eating delicious food and discovering me again, I feel healthier , no more sluggish feeling in the afternoons, I don’t want to have a nap! It isn’t a quick fix, it’s slow , steady and understanding the different food types and how they help and it’s patience. I can’t praise Sonia enough, I no longer feel guilty about what I eat as it’s just delicious, I have loved cooking new recipes and have a few favourites. Sonia … a big THANK YOU!

Working with Sonia, my Personalised Nutritional Therapist, taught me so much about my health and diet. Having Rheumatoid Arthritis and not knowing what the triggers were, I was eating food that I enjoyed but was not good for the condition. Sonia got to work by checking my family history, working with my doctor and checking my Blood test for any contra indications, looking at my daily food intake and recomending Food and fruits that was good for me and additionl food supplements that contributes to the maintenance of the whole body. I'm on a gluten free diet, my overall health has improved and I am happy that I found Sonia, and I would recommend her to anyone looking to improve their health.

Sonia is a wealth of information for all your nutritional needs. Approachable & genuinely wants to help. Her passion for what she does is very evident. I followed her 14 day detox programme. This plan was so easy to follow with clear & delicious recipes as well as explanations on what incorporates a balanced diet. Sonia regularly checked in and I felt totally supported. My diet had become shocking living off fast carbs and not caring what I was fuelling my body with. I was always tired. After 14 days I lost 7lb & 5 inches but the most remarkable change was how I felt in myself. Stronger, fitter & healthier. Sleep improved & my mood. My energy levels have rocketed. I have made eating a balanced diet part of my everyday norm and haven’t looked back. I’m seeing results both in my training and general everyday life. What you fuel your body with really makes a dramatic difference. I 100% recommend Sonia. She is exactly what you need to meet all your nutritional needs.
