Food Focus: Garlic

This video goes through some of the benefits of garlic.

I want to talk about garlic and how that can help support your health goals.

You might have heard of the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, often called the father of Western medicine. He is well quoted in the nutrition world for saying: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”. He was also a big fan of garlic and used to prescribe it to treat various medical conditions – and many of his uses are now supported by modern science.

Most of the health benefits of garlic come from the sulphur compounds released when garlic is crushed, chopped or chewed. Sulphur is one of the ingredients that are incredibly useful for supporting the detox process – particularly when it comes to ridding the body of heavy metals.
On top of this, garlic contains vitamin B6, vitamin C, manganese and selenium, plus smaller amounts of many other things your body needs.

Here are some other fantastic benefits of this brilliant ingredient:

  • Helps reduce the frequency and severity of the common cold.
  • Reduces blood pressure.
  • Improves cholesterol levels, which may have a knock-on effect on reducing risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
  • Contains potent antioxidants that may cut the damage caused by free radicals involved in the ageing process, reducing the risk for cognitive problems like Alzheimer’s and dementia.
  • As an antimicrobial, it’s also helpful for getting rid of unhelpful bacteria in the digestive tract.
